In 1776 Virginia adopted a declaration of rights
and a state constitution and sent soldiers and
supplies to aid the
war for independence;
Two famous sons of Virginia,
Thomas Jefferson, and
George Washington were both instrumental in
achieving independence for this nation.
Thomas Jefferson is remembered as the author
of the
Declaration of Independence and this nations
third President.
George Washington,
as the leader of American forces during the war,
effectively bringing the war to a close in
Virginia at
Yorktown. Washington went on to become
the first President of the United States, and
later retired to his beloved
Mount Vernon.
