The
Revolution War began in South Carolina In
June of 1776 when the British land and sea
forces attacked
Charleston. The British captured
Charleston in 1780. In August of that same year
the British defeated colonial troops under
General Horatio Gates at Camden. After the
disaster at Camden, South Carolina the American
army was forced to fight a guerrilla war of
attrition. In Camden the British soldiers were
captured by "The Swamp Fox",
Francis Marion with
only sixteen troops attacking the British
column. While doing so Francis helped to set
free American prisoners; British and Tory allies
then controlled most of
South Carolina. The
Battle at the "Cow Pens" was a decisive battle
that helped turn the tide of war in the Southern
Campaign of the American Revolution. Coming on
the heels of a patriot victory at nearby
Kings
Mountain on October 7, 1780, it was the second
successive staggering defeat for British forces
under
General Charles Cornwallis. Only nine
months after the
Battle of Cowpens, Cornwallis
was forced to surrender his army to
General
George Washington at
Yorktown, Virginia in
October 1781. South Carolina ratified the
United
States Constitution on May 23, 1788 becoming the
eighth state to enter the union.
