In 1766, Cape Fear Patriots offered the first
armed resistance to Royal authority in the
colonies. In
Alamance County in 1771,
Regulators clashed with the governor's
troops in what some consider the Revolution's
first battle. On February 27, 1776 loyalists
charged across partially dismantled Moores Creek
bridge. Just beyond the bridge nearly a thousand
North Carolina patriots waited quietly with
cannons and muskets poised to fire. The dramatic
victory ended British authority in the colony
and greatly influenced
North Carolina to be the
first colony to vote for independence. In
March of 1781, Maj. General
Nathanael Greene maneuvered against
Lt. General Charles Cornwallis at
Guilford Courthouse. The casualties
that Cornwallis took at Guilford Courthouse were
the final straw in a series of setbacks. He
abandoned the Carolinas and marched for
Virginia.
North Carolina, on April 12, 1776, authorized
her delegates to the Continental Congress to
vote for independence. In 1788, North Carolina
rejected the
United States Constitution because of the
lack of necessary amendments to ensure freedom
of the people; however, on November 21, 1789,
the state adopted the constitution, becoming the
twelfth state to enter the federal union.
