Shipbuilding was the first industry in
New
Hampshire, beginning in the early eighteenth
century. By the middle of the 1700s,
Portsmouth, the provincial capital, had
become a busy commercial port. Before the
American Revolution, New Hampshire residents
seized a British fort at Portsmouth in 1774 and
drove out the royal governor. During the
Revolutionary War, New Hampshire showed
strong support for independence. Extensive
preparations were made to protect New
Hampshire's harbors from British attack.
Although no official Revolutionary battles took
place on New Hampshire soil, over eighteen
thousand men from the state enlisted. New
Hampshire became the ninth state in the Union on
June 21, 1788, when it ratified the
U.S. Constitution.
