Editorial Review:

Product Description:
This book compiles the most lively expressions of nonduality, which are the understanding that existence is one undivided whole and that the daily distinctions we make within this unity are useful, but not ultimately true. The book conveys in a nonacademic style what nonduality itself is, including lively, challenging, diverse passages from the major traditions of Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Christianity, Sufism, Judaism, Taoism, and Native American Tradition. You'll also read about the nondual perspectives of psychotherapy, art, education, and the movie The Matrix. The core of the book is two chapters on the teachings of Ramana Maharshi, which were edited specifically for this work by David Godman and approved by Sri Ramanasramam. Covering many traditions and backgrounds, this collection is an excellent foundation for a study of nonduality.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A compilation from various faiths
What's nice about this one is the broad selection of the writings. There is even one from an American Indian. One is from an artist and another from a school educator. There is a Christian one. And of course several Eastern ones.

Some are typical and exactly what you would expect, like a section of the Tao Te Ching. But I was pleasantly surprised (as well as touched) especially by the American Indian, artist and school educator. They had stories that were not as expected. Not ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Universal Advaita
No other book exploring the philosophy of Advaita, has the breadth of One: Essential Writings by Jerry Katz. By exploring comparable life perspectives from the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic religions, as well as Native America and ancient China, the author clearly demonstrates the pervasive power of living life without the thought or idea of separation - what is called non-duality. That we are linked emanations from the one source of everything, is a life perspective found all over the world. But ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not Quite for Buddhists
This book contains many interesting views of non-duality, including some Buddhist ones. However, if one is a Buddhist, and looking for an exclusively Buddhist view, another book may be more to your taste.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excerpts from the human journey
This slim volume collecting excerpts from some of the world's well known sacred texts and enlightened writers makes a simple point, that awakening to our true nature is not a process or experience bound by culture or theology.

Most of One's selections are quite short, ranging from 5-10 pages, and are served with up with introductions setting time, place, and context. If the title and the introduction hadn't already clued you in, it very quickly becomes obvious that sages of ancient India ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Finally! A Book I Can Give to Friends that ask, "What...?" A++
I am grateful to Jerry Katz for offering us this superb introduction and explication on the meaning, function, and essence of Nonduality.

In the past, when friends or acquaintances asked me to recommend a book on this marvelous, but sometimes difficult subject, I was forced to hand them a half-dozen books and point out the pertinent sections--No more! Mr. Katz's lovely book brings all the essential writings together--and much more!

Part One of "One: Essential Writings on Nonduality", ... Read More
