Product Description:
NEW YORK TIMES AND INTERNATIONALLY BESTSELLING AUTHOR JOHN CONNOLLY DELIVERS A RIVETING THRILLER FEATURING PRIVATE DETECTIVE CHARLIE PARKER -- WHO NOW MUST UNRAVEL A TWISTED STORY OF BETRAYAL, UNCLEAN DESIRES, AND MURDER.
Daniel Clay, a once-respected psychiatrist, has gone missing. His daughter insists that he killed himself after allegations surfaced surrounding the harm done to patients in his care. Now a killer obsessed with finding the truth about his own daughter's disappearance is seeking revenge -- and Charlie Parker finds himself trapped between those who want the truth about Clay to be revealed, and those who will go to any length -- no matter the cost -- to keep it hidden.

Big fan of police procedurals and crime novels, et al. and while I like Connolly's writing, this one is filled with too many, overly long ruminations and reflections that could be pared to the same effect. Also, his similes tend to be a bit overworked. I also find his heavy reliance on the supernatural in this book not to my liking. And sadly, in this particular novel, Louis and Angel are not well-used. They are such great characters that their minimal appearance (and action) hurts this book. ... Read More

This is the first time I have read a book by John Connolly and I am sure that it won't be my last either.
The story and the cast of characters are exactly what I expected from this kind of book and it gave me a good read until the very last sentence. Recommended if you like tough detective novels with vicious criminals that is hunted down.
I didn't feel that I had to read his previous books starring Charlie Parker to enjoy this one - it can definitively be read as a stand-alone.

It started off so well. And then it went ... somewhere else.
At what point do stories about child sexploitation *become* a form of child sexploitation? I'm not talking about just this book, but about other books, and about shows such as Law and Order: SVU and, at times, the CSI franchise.
It seems as if the author selected a decades-old cabal of child abusers as the centerpiece of this book because this is the hot-button subject these days. Then he throws in some Stephen ... Read More

I picked this book off the shelf at my library because of the interesting book blurb. Then I started reading the book. I read 12 pages and kept thinking - HUH? What the heck does this have to do with anything? Twelve pages of mind-numbing boring interior dialogue. NOTHING HAPPENED! No inciting incident. I gave up - too many GOOD books out there to read.

I love his books. He is one of the very best writers - and certainly the best mystery-writer that I have ever read! His words - even at their most grotesque and haunting - remain lyrically beautiful. His characters are so fleshed out that it is amazing that they are not actually alive. And his plots are finely woven webs that link everything together in the end. This installment, revolving around a mysterious ring of child abusers, was very well done. And with the rather surprising turn of events at ... Read More
