Editorial Review:
Product Description:
The national bestseller, now in paperback.
In June of 1860 three-year-old Saville Kent was found at the bottom of an outdoor privy with his throat slit. T he crime horrified all England and led to a national obsession with detection, ironically destroying, in the process, the career of perhaps the greatest detective in the land. I nspector Jonathan Whicher’s real legacy, however, lives on in fiction: the tough, quirky, all-knowing and all-seeing detective that we know and love today…from the cryptic Sgt. Cuff in Wilkie Collins’s The Moonstone to Dashiell Hammett’s Sam Spade. The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher reads like the best of Victorian thrillers, and has been nominated for the Samuel Johnson Prize in London.

Although I am a regular Amazon reviewer and professional reviewer for publishers and booksellers, I am not going to offer the buyer a long, detailed review of The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher as I normally do in my reviews. So many readers and reviewers have already left competent, thorough reviews. I don't believe I could add much more, except to say, that in the hundreds of books I read and review each year, Kate Sumerscale's book is among the finest. I was completely enthralled with this true ... Read More

My title says it all. Bought this book to read while getting over back surgery. Let's just say that while it was interesting on one level, it didn't keep me awake from wanting to know who the murderer was. It was an ok read-just not great.

My review is based on the Audio CD version: "The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher" has a lot going for it. The mystery at the center of the story is enthralling. This book is definitely a "whodunit?" A child is murdered in cold blood, with family members, servants, and strangers all suspected. There are so many possible suspects that I really had to pay close attention in the first third of the story to keep track of each character. The author introduceS the murder story line very near the beginning ... Read More

Ms. Summerscale does a great job with this nonfiction crime story. Even after the murder is solved, in the middle chapters, she manages to pull off a surprise ending.

I have to feel at least a little bit sorry for Kate Summerscale. She's written a book which is nearly guaranteed not to appeal to many likely to read it. She's written a true crime novel which relentlessly puts in lots of historical detail about the nature of the detective in Victorian culture. The reviews are full of baffled blood & gore and whodunnit aficionados.
Well, I for one liked it. The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher fits very well into my sweet spot between loving mysteries and loving ... Read More
