Product Description: "You can't beat this story for drama. . . . An omnibus of everything ever known, spoken, or written about Doc Holliday." -Publishers Weekly "An engagingly written, persuasively argued, solidly documented work of scholarship that will surely take its place in the literature of the Old West." -Booklist In Doc Holliday: The Life and Legend, the historian Gary Roberts takes aim at the most complex, perplexing, and paradoxical gunfighter of the Old West, drawing on more than twenty years of research-including new primary sources-in his quest to separate the life from the legend. Doc Holliday was a study in contrasts: the legendary gunslinger who made his living as a dentist; the emaciated consumptive whose very name struck fear in the hearts of his enemies; the degenerate gambler and alcoholic whose fierce loyalty to his friends compelled him, more than once, to risk his own life; and the sidekick whose near-mythic status rivals that of the West's greatest heroes. With lively details of Holliday's spirited exploits, his relationships with such Western icons as Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson, and the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, this book sheds new light on one of the most mysterious figures of frontier history.

I have been researching and reading about the Tombstone, AZ affair between the Earps, Doc Holliday, and the "Cowboys" for years. This book is an excellent means by which to understand the man who was Doc Holliday, why and how he acted as he did, and what brought him to Tombstone. His relationships, quirks, and final days are well described within the covers of this book. I highly recommend it to all who are curious.

Doc Holliday by Gary Roberts is one of the definitive books on the history of the west and the life and times of Tombstone. It is expertly researched, well written and thoroughly tracks the life of Doc Holliday and his compatriots in the west. The book does not assume anything and takes stock in what researches no. It is an academic text but I don't feel that it detracts from the book itself and in reality offers a richer and more accurate account of Doc Holliday's life whether it is the episodes ... Read More

This book by Mr. Roberts was so detailed and was so descriptive, that I felt I was there. Lots of information that you would never know without reading this book.
Not as many pictures as I would have liked...but then...maybe not many are available.
Well worth reading!

I think back to some of the Westerns I watched on TV many decades ago. "Wyatt Earp," with the theme song's words, "Wyatt Earp, Wyatt Earp, Brave courageous and bold." Or Bat Masterson, "He wore a cane and derby vest. . . . They called him Bat, Bat Masterson." One thing in common with both? John Henry "Doc" Holliday.
This is a detailed biography of Doc Holliday, the notorious gambler and gunman of the West (called Doc because he was a dentist who, from time to time, actually earned his ... Read More
